On Friday 31st of March 2017, Aunty Ayo Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikoyi, welcomed the PwC Chess4Change visitation team.

The school which was co-opted into the PwC Chess4Change program in 2015 (2nd Edition) are active participants having hosted two mentorship events. Also worthy of note is the fact that it produced Nigeria’s representative at the 2016 African Youth Chess Championships (U16) category – Miss Jessica Pelomoh.

The Principal of the school, Mrs. Bimbola Ogunsina was on-hand to welcome the Team Lead, Mrs. Adenike Abiola who thanked her for the hospitality shown to the students and other guests in last mentorship talk held in the school. In response, Mrs. Ogunsina commended PwC for its sponsorship of the project and pledged her continued support.

The PwC Chess4Change courtesy visit continued on Monday, 3 April 2017 as the team visited Falomo Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi, and St. Timothy College, Onike, Yaba. Falomo was part of the inaugural edition of the program while St. Timothy College joined in the second season.

 

FALOMO SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

The Project Team Lead was welcomed by the principal of Falomo Senior Secondary School, Mr. Adebiyi, who stated that he is impressed to see people who are still passionate about the academic success of students. Commenting further, he said, “the PwC Chess4Change initiative is good and its programs help students to think fast, expose them to explore various options, and helps them to improve their analytical skills.”

 

He concluded by pledging his continued support for the initiative while giving his assurance that students of Falomo Senior Secondary School will make the most of the program.

ST TIMOTHY COLLEGE

Mr Femi Folayan; Principal, St Timothy College was present to welcome the PwC Ches4change visitation team to the school.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr Folayan expressed satisfaction considering its impact on the students and views it as a good and excellent one which has brought forth good results.  He added that PwC Chess4Change should continue with its good work.

The feedback from the schools so far has shown that the initiative has had a positive impact on the students.

On the 5th day Tuesday, 4 April 2017, the Project Team of the PwC Chess4Change initiative paid a courtesy visit to Jubilee Model Senior Grammar School, Coker, Orile; a new addition to the PwC Chess4Change project.

The team was warmly welcomed by the school Principal, Mr A.T. Abdul who expressed his excitement at the inclusion of his school in the PwC Chess4Change program. He mentioned that he was a Chess Player while in school, and explained to the visitation team how chess had a positive impact on his academics, especially in Mathematics.

He recalled that his classmates who joined him in playing chess began to see improvements in their academics which is a testament to the benefits of chess.

Mr Abdul promised to continue supporting the project saying the commitment shown by the students prompted him to dedicate a classroom solely for the chess club.

The courtesy visit continues.
