PricewaterhouseCoopers yesterday announced a partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Education for an initiative called Chess4Change.

The announcement was during a Press Conference held on Tuesday 25th February, 2014 at the prestigious Victoria Crown Plaza Hotel in Victoria Island.

Chess4Change is an initiative which uses the game of Chess as a tool for transformation. The programme will involve the use of Chess Facilitators to tutor students in the game of chess in selected schools Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Pedro Omontuemhen – Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers spoke on why PwC are passionate about using the platform of Chess. “I will be impressed to see the children become engineers, accountants, auditors and come back to work with us in the future and I believe Chess as a sport will help make better scholars  (PwC)”.

In response, The Honourable Commissioner of Education, represented by Mrs Babs Akinyeye – Director,Co-curricular Services expressed the excitement of the Ministry of Education on the initiative in Lagos State. She said, “The Chess4Change Initiative is an outstanding one and it will help the students to be outstanding as well as champions”.
She pledged full support to monitoring the Academic improvement of participating students.

MediaVision Limited – Project Managers of the initiative on behalf of PwC outlined through its CEO – Fela Bank-Olemoh that the pilot project will involve 6 selected schools within the Victoria Island and Ikoyi area which is the immediate vicinity for the sponsors. PwC is headquartered in Muri Okunola Street, Victoria Island.

The PwC Chess4Change Project will kick off in March, 2014.
