GRAND SLAM TOURNAMENT

The PwC Chess4Change initiative will be cumulating with a Grand Slam Tournament. The initiative which commenced over three (3) months ago with six (6) pilot schools – Akande Dahunsi Memorial Senior High School, Kuramo Senior College V.I, Falomo Senior College, Government College V.I, Holy Child College & Kings College – had four (4) experienced chess tutors/coaches taking the students through more than 24 coaching/tutoring sessions.

The students have greatly increased in their knowledge and understanding of the game of Chess. The Grand Slam Tournament is slated for Early 2015 at Kings College Annex Hall, Victoria Island, Lagos will be an avenue for the students to exhibit all the skills they have acquired.

PwC Chess4Change-MENTORSHIP SCHEME

As part of the plan to ensure optimum impact of the Chess4Change initiative, pilot schools in the inaugural edition of the programme had a Mentorship Scheme which kicked off 28th May 2014.

Executives of PwC led by Mrs. Bolanle Alade visited each of the pilot schools where they had Motivational/Career talks with the students. The PwC team also took time out to engage the student in the game of chess.

The principals as well as the participating students lauded this initiative saying “we are very glad to be part of this initiative, we sincerely thank PwC “.

 

 

PWC INITIATE KICKS OFF

The PwC Chess4Change initiative kicked off on Wednesday 12 March 2014, with the start of Chess Clubs in six selected Schools in Lagos.

Commenting at the kick off, Pedro Omontuemhen; Partner, PwC Nigeria, said “The game of Chess will be used as a tool for positive transformation, as it develops the analytical thinking of the students. Those who had no previous knowledge of the game, will develop chess skills as they get tutored by the facilitators assigned to each of the clubs”.

The schools involved in this maiden edition include; Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School, Government Senior College Victoria Island, Kuramo Senior College, Kings’ College, Falomo Senior High and Holy Child College.

The students have shown a lot of excitement and enthusiasm and look forward to learning the game and the positive impact on their academic work.

Chess has been proven to improve students’ focus, imagination and creativity, as well as their critical reasoning and mathematical skills. Students involved in the programme will have their academic performances evaluated.

Expressing his gratitude for the initiative, Mr Ajiboye Ahmed, Principal of Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School, said “My students are elated and are already looking forward to the next chess club meeting”.

The chess clubs tutelage will run for three months after which each of the participating schools will compete in a Grand Slam Tournament. PwC will award prizes to the Best Performing Chess Students and Schools.
