The Grand Slam event of the Chess4Change which is sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers begins at Kings College Annex, Victoria Island.
Speaking at the opening of the of the event, Mr. Sam Abu – Partner, Financial Services PwC said the game of chess is a game that requires strategic and critical thinking which is needed in day to day activities especially for students.
Another dignitary that spoke at the event was the Chairman of the Lagos State Chess Association, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh. In his words to the students, he said, “what matters most is your brain, with it, one can achieve anything in the world and chess helps developing it”. He further declared that the association is committed in making chess available to students in the Lagos.
Mrs Bisi Joseph, a representative of the Ministry of Education admonished the students to utilize this golden opportunity as the chess will improve their reasoning. She thanked the sponsors – PricewaterhouseCoopers for this wonderful initiative that helps students in knowledge development.
Afterwards, two rounds of chess games were played by the students in a round dubbing format and points were awarded accordingly. Schools participating are Kings College, Lagos, Government College, Victoria Island, Kuramo College, Victoria Island, Akande Dahunsi Memorial Senior High School, Ikoyi and Falomo Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi.
The Grand Slam event continues till Friday May 15th at the same venue.
