Nigeria Bankers Games

The highly anticipated 2019 season of the Nigeria Bankers Games kicked off on Sunday 20th of October 2019 at the Yabatech Sports Complex.
The opening day of the Nigeria Bankers Games was graced by a few dignitaries including ; Eric Iwuh – Hall of Famer, Tolulope Olukiran – YabaTech Consult, Akinkunmi Adigun – Curriculum Planning Executive, First Bank, Bayo Aderoju – Sector Team Lead Credit Risk, Sunday Oladiran –Regional Executive, Wema Bank, Tajudeen Bakare – Head of Operations, Wema Bank, Vivian Ezenwoko – Hall of Famer, Atilade Adeyinka – Head, IT Service Delivery, FCMB, Segun Williams – Relationship Manager, Sterling Bank, Bamidele Olujitan – Marketing and Corporate Communications, First Bank and Abdulrasheed Kayode Mustapha – Hall of Famer.

COLOURFUL MATCH PAST – Sterling Bank win First Gold

The day’s activities commenced with a ceremonial match past. Participating Banks contingents marched to dance rhythms to herald the 2019 NBG. It was a major highlight of the day. The march past which became a medalling event in 2018 was full of fanfare and glamour as teams strived to outshine each other.
It was, however, Sterling Bank that shone the brightest. They put up a sterling performance complete with dancers, Cheerleaders and colourful jerseys. FCMB and UBA did well enough to claim the Silver and Bronze Medals.

UBA V Union Bank

The first match of the day saw 2018 NBG Football champions – UBA take on Union Bank. Union Bank was looking to cause an upset as UBA were looking to begin their title defence with a win. The match was tightly contested as both teams created numerous chances. Kabir Dauda opened the scoring for UBA in the 31st minute and 6 minutes later Samir Bello doubled UBA’s advantage. The match ended 2-0 to UBA giving the defending champions their first win and first point of the season.

Fidelity Bank V Wema Bank

The second match of the day saw Fidelity Bank take on Nigeria Bankers Games returnees – Wema Bank. Fidelity Bank’s John Kadri gave his team an early lead in the 3rd minute and doubled his goal tally 8 minutes later. First-half substitute – Mark Emeji made it 3-0 in the 24th minute. Wema Bank pulled one back before the interval through Adetomiwa Jaiyeola. The second half presented a more balanced game. Wema Bank created a few chances in the second half but were unable to make any count. Fidelity Bank bagged two late goals through Samuel Ayo and Victor Jideonwo to round off an emphatic victory.

FCMB V ECO Bank

The penultimate match of the day witnessed last year’s bronze medallists – FCMB take on Ecobank. FCMB took the lead in the 10th minute through Victor Fasemore and quickly doubled their advantage 3 minutes late through Ayo Atoyebi. The final goal of the game came in the second half of the game, Eze Odinaka grabbed FCMB’s third and helped assure victory FCMB.

First Bank V Sterling Bank

The final match of the day saw First Bank and Sterling Bank lock horns. First Bank got an early lead through the 9th minute Said Abdullahi goal and the scoreline remained the same till the interval. First Bank sealed the victory in the second half with a 34th minute Theophilus Igberaese goal.
