Onikan Stadium, Lagos was the venue of 2017 GTBank Masters Cup Finals, as it came to a conclusion in grand style on Thursday, 29th June 2017.

The competition which is in its 6th season saw St. Finbarr’s College competing in their second final after losing 3-1 in 2015 to St. Gregory’s College. They came-up against 2-time champion Anwar-Ul-Islam Model College, Agege while in the female category; 4-time champion, Queens College, Yaba took on perennial rivals Ansar-Ud-Deen Girls High School, Itire.

In the first match of the day, defending champions Queens College showed why they have been champions for the past 4 season with some dominant displays and they were able to break the deadlock in the last minute of the first half through a well taken effort by Chioma Mbionwu.

The second half started the way first ended though Ansar-Ud-Deen Girls had their fair share of possession but they never looked like threatening the defending champions. Soon enough, Queens College grabbed their 2nd goal through Mbionwu sealing a fifth GTBank Masters Cup title for the girls from Yaba.

In the male category, a heavy downpour threatened to spoil a closely contested tie but the rain could not deter both teams’ drive for the trophy and bragging rights. Two quick goals from Austine Ikechukwu and Ajani Rafiu of St. Finbarr’s College put the boys from Akoka ahead going into the half time break. St. Finbarr’s went close to getting a third goal on resumption of the second half but were denied by a touchline clearance.

Anwar-Ul-Islam Model College eventually pulled one back from the spot in the last minute of the game through Giwa Sodiq but it was too little too late for the boys from Agege.

The winning schools got the sum of N750,000 while the runners up and second runners up in both categories went home with N500,000 and N350,000 respectively.
