GTBANK LAGOS STATE PRINCIPALS CUP-2014 WON BY AGEGE SCHOOLS
The GTBank Lagos State Principals cup 2014 came to an engaging final on Saturday 31st of May 2014 at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Surulere Lagos. The occasion witnessed a large turnout of secondary school pupils to cheer their various teams to victory. Also in attendance was an entourage from GTBank which included the Managing Director, Mr Segun Agbaje, General Manager Mrs Lola Odedina, Executive Directors Demola Adeyemi, Tola Omotola and Wale Oyedeji. Amongst the Lagos State dignitaries included the Hon. Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Wahid Enitan Oshodi, Permanent Secretary for Sports and Education Mr Oluseyi Whenu and Mrs Omolara Erogbogbo. Also in attendance was the Lagos State Football Association chairman, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi.
The occasion saw the girls take to the pitch first as defending champion Ikotun Senior High School, looked to successfully defend their title by winning it back to back. They however met stiff resistance in last year’s bronze medallists Government Senior College, Agege. Ikotun girls showed initial intent by taking the game to the girls from Agege but met a resolute defence. The tide however changed with Government Senior College, Agege swamping Ikotun with series of attacks. Ikotun defence however caved in midway into the first half as they found the trickery and pace of Yetunde Fajobi hard to contain. She scored the first goal and also scored the second goal.
Government Senior College, Agege were given a scare in the final minute as they conceded a late goal. It was however too little too late as it turned out to be a consolation goal.
The boys’ final was between champions two years ago, Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School Agege and Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu. Dairy Farm famou for their free flowing football were favourites to win this tie and they didn’t disappoint.
They found the going tough early on as the boys from Ikorodu ensured they frustrated their usual style of play and forced them on the back foot. This forced Dairy Farm to resort to the use of long balls to their strikers which included Sunday Adeoye. He was a thorn in the Ikorodu flesh. Their efforts finally paid off in the midway into the first half as they took the lead through Sunday Adeoye. He was back in business in the second grabbing his brace on the day. The second goal seemed to knock the winds out of the sails of Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu as they couldn’t muster much in response.
Prior to the finals the four schools were mentored and coached by Ex-Internationals Ann Chiejine, Waidi Akanni and Yisa Sofoluwe.
The governor of Lagos State Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) doled out gifts to MVP’s of the tournament. The MVP of the tournament went to Yetunde Fajobi of Government Senior College, Agege and Sunday Adeoye of Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School Agege who both won for themselves an all-expense paid trip to Brazil to witness the world cup, thanks to the Lagos State governor.
