Agege Stadium was agog on Tuesday 21st May 2014 as the GTBank-Lagos State Principals Cup semifinals were played. 8 of the best secondary schools in Lagos took to the pitch in both the boys and girls category as they vied for the final ticket.
The first game saw perennial finalists CMS girls grammar school take on Ikotun high school. It was a pulsating and evenly balanced game that saw both sides looking to book a place in the finals. Ikotun High School took the lead through Ajoke Akinbo, but it didn’t last long as CMS Girls responded a few minutes later through Folorunsho Aminat. With the game headed for penalties, a needless tackle in the box by Erogbon Sarah gifted Ikotun senior high school a penalty, which Omokhafe Elizabeth duly dispatched to retake the lead.
With CMS Girls reduced to 10, they rallied back to get an equalizer, but it was too little too late as Ikotun Senior High School berthed in the final.
The second girls’ semifinal produced all the excitement of a final and more. Government Senior College Agege locked horns with Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu. The game started at a frenetic pace with Ikotun getting the opener in the very 1st minute through Yetunde Fajobi. Yetunde who incidentally is in the Lagos team to the DAWN games doubled her teams’ advantage a few minutes later. The girls from Ikorodu were however undaunted and came back forcefully through Rabiu Abisoye via a freekick. She also got the equalizer through a free kick before the first half was up. The second half started in much the same fashion as Elizabeth Sunday got a brace to give Government Senior College, Agege a berth in the final.
The boys category saw Methodist Senior Grammar School, Badagry take on Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu. It was a tense game with Oriwu enjoying the better possession and they did make the possession count as two goals from Olalekan Nuraina and Sokeye Olasunkanmi gave them a two goal first half lead. A third goal was scored by Sokeye Olasunkanmi to add gloss to the score line. 3 – 0 it finished.
The last semifinal of the day featured Ansar-Ud-Deen Senior Grammar School, Imota and Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School, Agege. It was a hugely entertaining and exciting affair with Dairy Farm showing superior skill. Dairy Farm was the favourite after dethroning the defending champion Keke High School, Ifako Ijaiye, Agege in the quarter final. Dairy Farm got going very quickly but took a while before the got the opening goal. The goal came in the final minute of the first half through Toheeb Opaleye. He added another one in the second half before the MVP of the match Sunday Adeoye added 2 more to finish 4 – 0 in favour of Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School, Agege.
The final comes up at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Saturday 31st of May 2014.
