The holidays are behind us, along with lots of downtime and lots of food all around. Lavish family meals, social events, and lots of holiday snacks (packed with salt, fat, and sugar) are all behind us and now it’s time to return to a nutritious routine –or start a new one to shed the unnecessary weight we’ve accumulated throughout the holiday season.

Afterall, we need to be fit for the new sporting season that’s around the corner.

Here are 5 tips to help you achieve your fitness goal:

1. Start right now!
Procrastination only increases the damage because it’s too easy to justify another slice of cake because “I’m starting diet tomorrow”.

2. Exercise
It is still the best measure you can take to get back in shape. Move in ways you enjoy. If the weather allows it, go for a walk outside, and if not, you can always exercise indoors.

3. Drink a lot of water
Drinking large quantities of alcohol is bad for your health. Alcohol contain many calories and also causes dehydration. To make up for your holiday alcohol consumption, drink plenty of water. Your skins, kidneys and many organs will benefit.

4. Make healthy food choices
After the excesses of the holidays, your body will naturally crave light and healthy foods. Choose fruits, vegetables and healthy food. Your body would thank you for it.

5. Keep stress in check and get more sleep
Treat yourself to a good night’s sleep. You’ ll feel rested and have more energy to take on new challenges of the New Year. Avoid unnecessary stress and find ways to relax.
