Nigeria FMCG Games

The 2019 Nigeria FMCG Games continued on Sunday at the Yabatech Sports Complex, it was action-packed with two football matches and the commencement of both the scrabble and athletics events.
Dignitaries in attendance on the day include;

  • HOF Mr Rotimi Odusola – Legal Director/Company Secretary, Guinness.
  • Mr Adeniyi Adedeji – Sports Director, Seven-Up.
  • Mrs Ayo Alabi – Corporate Affairs Manager, Guinness
  • Mr Kenneth Omeni – Treasury Manager, FrieslandCampina
  • Mr Yomi Ajewole – Quality Assurance Manager, Transmed
  • Mr Meshak Sabo – Sports Director, Guinness.

The first match of the day saw FrieslandCampina take on Seven-Up. FrieslandCampina came into the game knowing a win could seal gold for them in the football event while Seven-Up were searching for their first points of the 2019 FMCG Games Football Event. Halfway into the first half an unfortunate Aduku Boniface own goal gave FrieslandCampina the lead. Ope Anizor got himself on the scoresheet just before the break after finishing off a well lofted Chibuzor Nduka long ball. In the first minute of the second half, Ope Anizor bagged himself a second from the penalty spot which was enough to see FrieslandCampina claim the 2019 FMCG Games football gold.

Guinness vs Transmed Pic

The second match of the day was between Guinness Nigeria and Transmed Nigeria. Guinness knew a victory was enough to keep them in contention for the football gold. Transmed also came in the game with a chip on their shoulders, also looking to get their first points on the board. The only goal of the game came in the second half when Nonso Daniel found substitute Elijah Alao with a cross, Elijah beat two defenders and put the ball past the onrushing Evwere Ejiro in goal to hand Transmed their first points and first win of the 2019 FMCG Games.

The final matchday will see three teams – Nestle, Guinness and Transmed – slug it out for the Silver and Bronze medal.

Athletics

The Athletics event also started this past weekend. Athletes both male and female took to the track to participate in the 400m, 200m and 100m heats. Last year’s female 100m gold medalist – Nestle’s Banjoko Kuburat returns this year in the hopes of retaining her gold medal.
Last year’s 200m gold medalists Ajibade Jumoke and 100m and 200m silver medalist Nicholas Marvis both of Nestle both qualified for the 200m and 400m finals.
In the male category, last year’s 100m gold medalist – Nestle’s Afolabi Ebenezer qualified for all finals – 100m, 200m and 400m. FrieslandCampina’s John Andrew who won the bronze medal in the 2018 100m race also qualified for 2019 final and will be hoping to claim the gold medal this year.

The 2019 Nigeria FMCG Games concludes this Sunday, 13th October 2019 with a Closing Ceremony at the Yabatech Sports Complex. Find below the schedule for the remainder of the 2019 FMCG Games;
