It was another beautiful sporting weekend at the Yabatech Sports Complex as the Nigeria FMCG Games continued with the starting rounds of Table Tennis and Chess, while football entered its second round of matches.
In attendance were a few dignitaries from participating companies, they included;
- Yomi Ajewole – Quality Assurance Manager, Transmed.
- Kenneth Omeni – Head of Treasury, FrieslandCampina.
- Adesete Adewole – HR Specialist, Nestle.
- Olurishe Michael – Chief Compliance Manager, Nestle.
Table Tennis
Table Tennis and Chess events commenced with participants gearing up to begin the medal rush for their teams. Also, the Table Tennis event saw the introduction of the exciting mixed doubles category which added a different dimension to the event.
In the male category, participants jostled to make it past the opening rounds of the ping pong game, the defending Singles Champion, Nestles Banjoko became the first casualty as he fell at the quarterfinals to Guinness Nigeria’s Osayawe Kizitun, set up the chance for a new Champion to emerge.
In the female category, three FrieslandCampina contestants made it to the semi-final stage. In the mixed doubles category, it will be a battle between Guinness, Nestle and debutants Seven-Up in the semi-finals.
The Chess event began and concluded with teams claiming their first medals of the 2019 FMCG Games season. In the female category, Nestle claimed the gold medal, FrieslandCampina claimed the silver medal while Guinness rounded up the podium in third. In the male category, Nestle claimed their second gold of the season, Guinness came in second place and FrieslandCampina rounded up the medaling positions.
FrieslandCampina V Transmed Nigeria
The first football match of the day saw FrieslandCampina take on Nigeria FMCG Games debutants Transmed Nigeria, both teams were looking to bounce back from disappointing first-week outings and both teams were looking for their first win of the tournament. Within the first few minutes, a wonderfully-lofted ball by Owolabi Samson was met by Oge Anizor on the half volley to give FrieslandCampina an early lead. Transmed drew level through first-half substitute – Josiah Ajibade who finished off an Afiz Olaniyi pass in the 25th Minute. The matchwinner came on the stroke of half time when Owolabi Samson was brought down in the penalty area. The penalty was taken by Man of the Match, Oge Anizor to secure a brace for himself and three points for FrieslandCampina.

Nestle V Seven-Up
The second and final match of the day saw Seven-Up take on defending Champions Nestle. Nestle were looking to secure their second three points of the season after successful week one outing while the debutants were looking to make a good first impression. The match was goalless at the break after a tightly contested first half. The breakthrough came early in the second half when a momentary lapse in concentration allowed Uzor Obinna easy access to goal, an opportunity he gleefully took to give Nestle the lead. 9 minutes later Nestle doubled their lead through a penalty taken by Bilesanmi Adebayo who was brought down in the penalty area and the 2019 top goal scorer converted from the penalty spot to double his team’s advantage. Ayeola Daramola also got on the score sheet after pouncing on a loose ball which left him one-on-one with the Seven-Up goalkeeper, Ayeola was able to lob the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to extend Nestle’s lead. The final goal of the game came from a penalty which was converted by Bilesanmi Adebayo who finished the game with a brace and 5 goals so far in the football event.

SPECTATORS ENGAGEMENT
Fans/Spectators were not left out as they won lots of prizes and freebies while competing in various challenges like the fastest fingers and fuel-your-belly. The DJ was on ground to play lovely tunes to excite and thrill the crowd.
