The 1000 °C Summer Experience kicked off with FIFA 19 & MK11 on Friday morning at the Basketball Court of the University of Lagos Sports Complex, Akoka.
FIFA 19
GROUP STAGE
The FIFA 19 tournament started with a bang! 48 gamers grouped into 12 groups. Each group consisted of four players who played against each other. Top two players from each group advanced to the next round while the overall 8 best losers joined them in the round of 32. Surprisingly! #2 ranked Ginchi was drowned in the elimination waters and couldn’t make it out of Group C.
ROUND OF 32
With ‘Daniel’ beating ‘Paulskeddo’ 9 – 2, ‘Sesu’ thumping ‘Uncool Josh’ 6 – 0 and a seven-goal thriller between ‘Ekwem’ & ‘Young Frizzy’, it can be best described as an exhilarating Round of 32 with plenty of goals scored.
A good number of top gamers had it easy and cruised into the next round with ease.
ROUND OF 16
The round of 16 was quite intense as the gamers could feel themselves getting closer to the prize money as they were all guaranteed at least five thousand Naira at this round. Some of the scorelines dazed the spectators. ‘Daniel’ narrowly escaping ‘Adetoun’ in a 13 goal thriller – 7 – 6. The top clash of the round was between ‘Joger’ (4) and ‘Adefola’ (3), the top Gamers entertained spectators to a 4 – 3 scoreline with Joga emerging the winner.
QUARTER-FINALS
The Games moved on quickly to the next round. Left with 8 gamers to claim the grand prize, the tournament got hotter. 18th ranked ‘Arogunmati’ blew everyone’s mind by thumping 4th placed ‘Joger’ 4 – 1, 1st ranked ‘Imaji Boy’ beat ‘DooMax’ by a lone-goal, ‘Jesse’ and ‘Otis’ gave us a 5 goals thriller which ended 4 -1 in ‘Otis’ favour. The last quarterfinal game was a blockbuster involving ‘Daniel’ and ‘Sesu’ featuring 9 goals! ‘Sesu’ came out on top by beating ‘Danel’ 5 – 4.
SEMI-FINALS
With every gamer showing what they’ve got on the console, ‘Arogunmati’, ‘Imaji Boy’, ‘Otis’ & ‘Sesu’ emerged as the semifinalists. The gamers picked up their pads and slugged it out for a ticket to the final. ‘Imaji Boy’ beat ‘Arogunmati’ 2 – 1 while ‘Sesu’ again outscored his opponent ‘Otis’, beating him 5 – 4.
THIRD PLACE
‘Otis’ and ‘Arogunmati’ battled it out in the third-place match which ended 2 -3 in ‘Otis’ favour.
FINAL
IMAJI BOY VS SESU
The FIFA 19 tournament came to a climax in the evening when 4-time champion and number 1 CyberGamer ‘Imaji Boy’ and new sensation, ‘Sesu’ went head to head for the grand prize. The new boy ‘Sesu’ caused an upset by beating the CyberGames GOAT 3-1 thus ending Imaji’s Championship-winning streak which stretched back to December 2018.
MORTAL 11 KOMBAT
The 1000 °C Summer Experience also featured a Mortal Kombat competition, the first of its kind in CyberGames.
Fourteen players registered and were put into a double-elimination bracket to fight for a prize pool of ₦ 65,000.
The opening round was quick and feisty as top fighters like ‘Escanor’, ‘Bolt’, ‘Jack’, ‘Sir Busssie’, ‘DTBumblebee’, ‘Combo’ and ‘Ojeaga’ cruised into the next round while their opponents fell into the losers group one bracket.
Round two featured routine victories for Ojeaga and Ogor, ‘SirBussie’ fell to the losers division at the hands of ‘DT-Bumblebee’ to be joined by Jack who was comprehensively defeated by Okoli Chukwudi.
In the losers division, SirBussie immediately regained form and defeated Saminu in straight rounds, Jack was immediately knocked out by Shinigami, Bolt defeated Combo to reach the third-round, Escanor saw defeat in consecutive ties as he was beaten by Yungla Flame.
The winners Semi-Finals saw Ojeaga defeat Ogor Nkemehor with victory in three straight rounds. Okoli Chukwudi emerged victorious in the second semifinal in identical fashion. In the losers division,
Round Three of the losers tournament saw Shinigami defeat SirBussie and Bolt defeat Yungla Flame in identical fashion. Both victors immediately faced Ogor Nkemehor and DT-Bumblebee and continued their form by beating both to meet in the fifth round of the losers tournament.
The losers tournament fifth round saw Shinigami defeat Bolt to reach the final round of the losers tournament where he would meet the loser of the winners final.
Okoli Chukwudi immediately faced off Shinigami in the losers final and bagged a 3-1 victory that would have certainly offered some consolation.
The winners’ division final saw Ojeaga narrowly emerge as Victor in a tight contest ending 3-2 and therefore crowned as the first CyberGames MK11 Champion.
