The 2016 edition of the GTBank/Ogun State Principals Cup took place on Tuesday, 3rd August 2016 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, with Muslim High School, Isolu and Alamuwa Grammar School, Ado Odo winning the girls and boys category respectively.

In the boy’s category which featured two former champions, Alamuwa Grammar School, Ado-Odo and Methodist Comprehensive College, Shagamu saw the Ado Odo boys victorious after defeating the most potent attack and best defensive side, Methodist Comprehensive College 2-1.

The likes of Sulaiman Ridwan, Hunpe Taiwo, Bello Sodiq and Olaribigbe Olawale could not save their side which was tagged as the best attack and defence side during the qualifiers prior the final after scoring 21 and conceding just 2 goals.

Earlier in the day in what was described as a classic case of the best attacking side against the best defensive side, defending champion in the female category, Muslim High School, Isolu defeated Iganmode Grammar School, Ota 3-2 in the encounter that was filled with skills and ball passing accuracy from the defending champions.

With a strike force consisting of Fausat Alani and Iyabo Ajani, it did not take the defending champions much time to penetrate the defence of the best defending team converting a header into the net with more goals from both sides.

The game ended 3-2 in favour of the defending champions, Muslim High School, Isolu who went home with prize money of N1, 000, 000 while Iganmode Grammar School, Ota took home the 1st runner up prize money of N750,000.

However, reacting on the significance of the competition in Nigeria’s educational framework, the MD/CEO of Guaranty Trust Bank plc, Mr. Segun Agbaje, believes “the competition will pave the way for youths to cultivate their sporting talents, while fostering and building a healthier lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives.”

He enjoined the students to imbibe the spirit of fair play, hard work, and discipline, which are some of the core values of GTBank.

Aside the Ogun State Principals Cup, GTBank also sponsors the Lagos State Principals Cup, the Masters Cup tournament and the Champions Cup.
