PwC Chess4change

The 5th Edition of the PwC Chess4Change 1st Mentorship Programme kicked off with 18 participating schools on Wednesday, 7th November at The Incubator, Victoria Island, Lagos.

NARRATIVES

The PwC Chess4Change 1st Mentorship Programme kicked off with opening remarks by Mrs. Delia Asuzu. She expressed her excitement to see the students at the 1st Mentorship programme. She went further to appreciate the Lagos State Ministry of Education, teachers, and Chess Facilitators for contributing to the success of the PwC Chess4Change Programme.

In her remarks, she said to the students; “seize every opportunity to participate in the GrandSlam because the winner will be sponsored to an international chess tournament”.

She concluded by advising the students to, “remain hardworking and make your parents proud”.

1ST MENTORSHIP SESSION – CRIME AFFECTING YOUNG PEOPLE AND HOW THEY CAN BE PREVENTED (ESPECIALLY ON SOCIAL MEDIA) BY AJAMOLAYA, OLUSEGUN IFETAYO, PSC.

Mr. Ajomolaya, Olusegun Ifetayo Psc. started the session by explaining to the students that “any action taken against the law is referred to as a crime and there must be a sanction for every crime committed”. He went further to state that “the Nigerian law does not jail individuals below the age of 18”.

“Crime is becoming rampant among our younger generations and many engage in it for fun without realizing the consequences of their actions. These crimes are not victimless, as such law enforcement agents view them seriously.”

He advised students to desists from crimes like Cybercrime (internet scams), Obtaining money by tricks and false pretence, Violent crimes like robbery and offenses affecting public order. He made them understand that “acts of crime is a slow addiction and addictions can lead to poor academic performance.”

Words of advice from Mr. Ajomolaya, Olusegun Ifetayo Psc.

“Stop the spreading of fake news on social media, it can mislead the general public and the society at large”

“Listening to your parents because they will never lead you astray”

“Follow the school rules and regulation; these have been formulated to guide you and protect you”

“Be cautious of new fashion trends and dress properly”

“If you notice danger signs around you notify your parents.”

“Have faith in your religion and always be prayerful.”

“Take motivational seminars seriously and adhere to the teachings.”

“When stranded at night, go to the closest motor park or police station in the area.”

“Don’t be rude to the helps employed by your parents and show respect to elders.”

“Always be observant and discreet about the things you say.”

“Avoid late night movements because you can’t control what happens at night and evil perpetrators make use of the darkness.”

MOVIE REVIEW – QUEEN OF KATWE BY EYITA OTUDOH

The movie review was anchored by Mr. Eyita Otudoh. The students shared theirlearning points from the movie, some of them are;

  • In chess, the small one can become the big one (A pun can become a Queen)
  • Chess teaches you how to plan, survive, analyse threats and solve problems.
  • Have a vision for your life
  • You don’t have to fit in to win
  • Losing does not make you a failure
  • Other people’s life pattern does not determine yours.
  • Going to school is important.
  • Chess teaches discipline and improves mental strength
  • Never compromise your values
  • Be brave
  • Listen to feedbacks and learn to make amends
