 HOW IT WENT DOWN

Day 2 of the  2nd Mentorship had in attendance:

  • Adonye Adafe-jaja                  –          Digital Risk and Cyber Security, PwC
  • Olawunmi Fagbemi                –          PwC
  • Mrs Oluwatoyin Okuwobi       –          Principal, Immaculate Heart Senior Secondary School, Maryland
  • Mr Babalola Adebayo             –          Lagos State Chess Association
  • Mr Jimmy Sogbesan               –          Chief Operation Officer, MediaVision Limited 

The host principal welcomed everyone to the event and thanked PwC for the Chess4Change program. She added that PwC is “building a nation by educating the students through chess.”

She also stated that the PwC Chess4Change Programme “Is a long term project whose impact will reflect impact the society in the coming years.”

Ist session : Building Self-confidence by Adonye Adafe-jaja. 

According to Adonye Adafe, “Self-Confidence is believing that you can perform something regardless of the challenge or difficulty in front of you.” He added: “You cannot be self-confident unless you have done something a lot of times.”

HOW TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE

  • Repetition builds self-confidence.
  • Persistence is key
  • Tell yourself that “I can be what I want to be and I have the potential for greatness

2nd Session – Benefits of Reading/Handling Peer Pressure by Olawunmi Fagbemi

Olawunmi Fagbemi taught the students about the benefits of reading which include:

  1. Impact, Reading books have impacts on their lives.
  2. Reading helps to motivate
  3. Reading gives you the ability to be imaginative
  4. When reading, we have the opportunity to understand and comprehend things.
  5. You build your language by reading
  6. Reading gives knowledge.

In conclusion, she advised the students to not limit themselves to school books but they should also learn to read outside their school curriculum. Whatever they want to be in life they should read about it.

Handling Peer Pressure

She stated that everybody at every point in time faces peer pressure. To further explain, “Peer pressure comes from the people around them, what they watch, see and hear.” To ignore negative peer pressure, she advised the students to have their own personal standards. “If you don’t have a place you’re going to, people will take you to where they are going”. In conclusion, she advised them not to heed to negative peer pressure even when they are criticized of bullied they should hold on to their good virtues.

Closing Remarks

The closing remarks was given by Mr Jimmy Sogbesan. He advised the students to take advantage of the opportunity and refer to all that they have learnt from the mentorship
