The 2nd Mentorship Scheme of the PwC Chess4Change programme kicked off with a welcome address by the Principal of the host school, Mr O.A. Amao.

In his speech, he reminded the students of the great opportunity they have in participating in the programme while also emphasising the impact of chess on their mental development. He stated that, “The game of chess strengthens the mental capacity and you should take advantage of this opportunity to improve yourselves.

1st Session – Control your Thoughts by Godbless Gbenebichie

Godbless did a thorough analysis on the topic – “Control your Thought”. He gave the students three ways to control the mind:

  • Learn to read: Not just your books but also biographies about people that have succeeded and other intellectual books
  • Learn to speak out: When you are faced with a challenge, state what you actually want continuously and don’t think about the challenge.
  • Be Positive: Consciously learn to think positively

2nd Session – Learning from Failure by Beersheba Alogbo

She advised the students to “Incorporate the mind of learning from your failures rather than blaming others. Accept failure and change it to success”.

How to learn from Failure

  • Come back better to face the fight.
  • Think about how you can be better and stronger. That’s the difference between those that win and and those who fail.
  • Learn to think and examine your life. Think about what you have done so far and think of how to improve daily.

She concluded her session with “How to move from failure to Success”

  • Accept failure
  • Think about the failure and the reason for failing
  • Think about your next line of action
  • Don’t wallow in failure make a move and talk to people that can help you.
