PwC CHESS4CHANGE MENTORSHIP SCHEME

The event took place at The Grand Junction, Landmark Towers, Victoria Island on Wednesday, 26 April 2017. PwC executives Mrs Delia Asuzu, Mr Eyita Otudor, Mr Uche Adiele and Mrs Grace Etieno-Essienete were in attendance. Also joining them are Mr Jimmy Sogbesan (Chief Operating Officer – MediaVision Limited) and Mrs Adenike Abiola (Head, Projects – MediaVision Limited). Mr Tunde Oladejo, Miss Lola Sadiku, Mr John Ojo and Mr Ekpo Edidiong represented the Lagos State Chess Association. Students and Sport officers of participating schools were also in attendance.

PwC BUILDING TOUR

The 2nd mentorship programme started with a tour of the PwC office. The tour was introduced to the programme to enlighten the students on the activities of PwC. With the aim of inspiring them to pursue their goals and achieve success. The tour was curated by Mrs Grace Etieno-Essienete. The students toured the various meeting rooms used for meetings and training.

Mrs Essienete further explained that in addition to training staff of PwC; the company also provides external training for various organizations. She rounded-up the tour by saying that PwC operates in four (4) areas; Tax, Auditing and Assurance and Advisory services.

Mrs Delia Asuzu from PwC gave the opening remarks. She welcomed everyone to the event stating that it is an honour to host the students. She stated that the idea of the PwC Chess4Change is to inspire the students to achieve success. PwC is committed to solving problems and since critical thinking is required in achieving this; chess is the ideal game.

 

MENTORSHIP SCHEME

The first talk for the day was given by Mr. Uche Adiele who spoke to the students on the topic – Problem Solving Skills. Mr Adiele enlightened the students that as individuals they will face problems and doing nothing is not an option but being prepared and ready to solve upcoming problems in life will determine success. He further urged the students to identify problems and after that make a list of possible solutions to each problem.

The testimonial session came in after, this part of the program is a feedback section where selected students from the participating schools give speeches on how the game of chess has improved their lives.

In the session, Garuba Fathia an SS 2 student of Aunty Ayo Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikoyi shared her experience since her involvement in the program.

Speaking, she said since chess is a thinking game; it helps me think clearly before taking decisions and also because chess entails being time-conscious I am able to plan my time well to ensure punctuality in school and keeping to my study time.

                  

Mr Eyita Otudor from PwC took the second session and spoke about – Planning Your Life Goals.

He awakened the minds of the students and prompted them to be prepared for opportunities, and set goals stating that one of the important attributes of achieving success is to ask questions.

During the question and answer session, he taught the students the difference between dreams, visions and goals and identified that setting goals guarantees their success. He also taught them how to deal with low self-esteem.  He implored the students not to listen to everything everyone says so that their thinking will not become their limitation.

MINI CHALLENGE

There was a Novelty Chess Match to kick start the Mini Challenge. The match was between a student from Falomo High School, Ikoyi and Mr Otudor. Mr Otudor emerged as the winner of the match.

The event continued with the Mini Challenge.

Mr Jimmy Sogbesan, Chief Operating Officer – MediaVision Limited gave the closing remarks. He expressed delight in being among youths. He charged the students to make use of the program to the best of their abilities.

           

Adams Mariam an SS 2 student of Kuramo College, Victoria Island gave the Vote of thanks. She thanked PwC for the opportunity to participate in the program while praying that the company will continue to grow in leaps and bounds. She also expressed her desire to see the program extended to other schools.
