Semi-Final – Match 1
The first match of the day saw the defending champions of the Nigeria FMCG Games – FrieslandCampina Wamco trade tackles with defending champions of the Nigeria Insurance Games – Leadway Assurance. This was one match that would have messed up any bookmaker’s prediction because not only was the competition fierce, it was balanced and both teams gave as much as they got making it difficult for one to pick a favourite.
The first-half started in an emphatic fashion as FrieslandCampina mounted pressure at the defence of Leadway Assuance but were rebuffed by their resolute defense manned by Muri Azeez and Francis Obagwu. The rest of the half continued at the same pace as it ended goalless.
The second-half was more balanced as both teams restricted play and measured each other evenly. The match ended goalless and headed straight into penalties. Ultimately FrieslandCampina got the better of Leadway Assurance as they edged them 4:2 on penalties.
Semi-Final – Match 2
The second match was between the two banks in the competition, First Bank vs FCMB, renewing their rivalry from the Nigeria Bankers Games.
The start of the match saw First Bank create a wonderful opportunity and a sensational strike hit the post and had FCMB scrabbling their lines. As the match progressed, FCMB grew in confidence and the game became a more balanced affair. Both teams pressed for the opener but were thwarted by goal keepers Olaoluwa Farodoye of First Bank and Elijah Asafa of FCMB who made crucial saves to keep their sides in the game. The match eventually ended in a stalemate and went straight into penalties.
Asafa Elijah however came out tops as he made two saves and scored the winning penalty to deny the First Bank team a spot in the finals with FCMB triumphing 6:5 on penalties.
