The 2nd Mentorship scheme of the PwC chess4change initiative took place at Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Grammar School, Bariga in September 2023 with the theme: Digital Literacy; A Tool for Career and Self-development.
The event had a talk session with two (2) speakers facilitating topics on digital space centering around Career Building and Impact on the Economy. There was also a debate session with participating schools representing their Education Districts.
Highlights of the Mentorship Programme
The Mentorship Programme kicked off with a brief welcome remark by Sylva Ifedigbo – Senior Manager, Clients and Market Development, PwC Nigeria. He welcomed the participating schools to the event and emphasized PwC Nigeria’s dedication to the chess4change initiative. He also stressed the significance of the Mentorship program in preparing students with the necessary skills for their future lives and careers.
MENTORSHIP SESSIONS
The session creates an avenue for the students to learn and equip themselves with skills required for career and life. The 1st Speaker, Tunde Opaleye, Technical Lead at Knit Technologies, an audacious startup playing in the events listing and social networking space spoke on the topic; “Importance of Digital Space in Career Building.” during the first session. He highlighted what digital space and career are, the benefits in career building as well as the actions and applications required.
The session was engaging as students interacted with the speaker.
DEBATE SESSION
The event continued with the 1st debate session with representatives from the participating schools drawn to represent their education district. The session had Education District II competing against Education District IV while Education District III competed against Education District VI. The chief speakers are allotted 2 minutes each while the support speakers are allotted 1 minute each.

The 2nd talk session had David Falana, Head HR at KRAKS TV as the guest speaker. He spoke on the “Importance and Impact of Digital Space on the Economy. Using KRAKS TV as a case study, he urged the students to be the creators of the change they desire through hard work and perseverance, starting in their own small space.

All the participants in the debate were given branded items and cash gifts as prizes.
CHESS MINI COMPETITION
The program ended with two (2) rounds of the Chess Mini Challenge. This challenge provided participating students with the platform to test their abilities in a competitive environment.
RESULT
The top five (5) schools at the end of the 2 rounds are;
- Ireti senior Grammar School – 2 points
- CMS Girls Senior Grammar School – 2 points
- Unity Junior College, Oshodi – 2 points
- Wahab Folawiyo Senior Secondary School, Osborne Ikoyi – 2 points
- Sari Iganmu Senior Secondary School, Coker Orile – 2 points
The students benefitted greatly from the guidance and support provided by the mentors at the event. The PwC Chess4change program will be concluding the 8th edition with the Grand Slam Tournament scheduled to hold in October 2023. This promises to be exciting as we look forward to the crowning of the best chess player and school in the program.
