PwC Chess4changeUpdates

The PwC Chess4Change programme had its annual Grand Slam Tournament with 18 Secondary Schools across 4 Education Districts participating to determine who will be crowned winner for the 8th Edition.

The 3-day event was held at the Indoor Sports Hall National Stadium Surulere Lagos with Stakeholders form the Ministry of Education, Lagos State Sports Commission, Nigeria Chess Federation, School Sports Federation as well as the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in attendance.

The opening ceremony had a brief remark from Kenneth Erikume, Country Operations Partner PwC Nigeria reiterating the firm’s commitment to the chess4change programme stating that PwC is committed to changing lives of the students. He also commended the female students for participating in the programme emphasizing the importance of the girl child in society building.

IIRETI SENIOR GRAMMAR SCHOOL EMERGE WINNER OF PwC CHESS4CHANGE 8TH EDITION GRAND SLAM TOURNAMENT

IRETI SENIOR GRAMMAR SCHOOL, WINNER TEAM CATEGORY

 

After 3 days of competitive chess games, Ireti Senior Grammar School Falomo emerged as the winner of the team as well as the Individual category of PwC Chess4Change Grand Slam Tournament.

The school achieve the feat of defending the title it won in the last edition in both categories. Iheanyinchukwu Michael defended the title he won last year in a very close match with fellow team mate Onikute Samuel. Both players had 5.5 points after round 6 but Michael won via a tie breaker game rule.

The school’s chess club coordinator said during this year’s press conference for the announcement of start of 8th edition that they are coming to defend the title they won in 2022.

Sam Abu, Country Senior Partner PwC Nigeria was on ground to grace the occasion. He participated in the exhibition game where he played Fela Bank-Olemoh, Chairman Board of Director at MediaVision Limited. In an interview after the game, he reiterated PwC Nigeria commitment to the chess4change programme and the benefits embedded in playing chess.
