The Remita Corporate Champions Cup Quarter Finals

It was an exciting weekend of activities in the Remita Corporate Champions Cup 2017 opening ceremony. The event took place at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Yaba on Saturday, 12th of August 2017. It was graced by dignitaries and top executives including the CEO of SystemSpecs Nigeria Mr John Obaro, COO of MediaVision Ltd Mr Jimmy Sogbesan and former Nigerian Goalkeeper Peter Rufai A.K.A Dodo Mayana who is also the Tournament Ambassador.

Novelty Match

The event began with a novelty match between the Remita Eagles and Stanbic IBTC football team. In a game where the Remita Eagles hoped to make a statement, Stanbic IBTC came with a different intention. Stanbic IBTC won the match by scoring three goals. The match ended with exchange of pleasantries by both sides amid cheers from spectators.

Quarter Final – Match One

The first match of the tournament saw Leadway Assurance take on FrieslandCampina. Both teams were Champions in their respective Industry games. They approached the game with a sense of urgency testing each other’s goalkeeper early in the match.

FrieslandCampina got a shocker when Folorunsho of Leadway pulled away from his marker and rifled a shot past Idris Olarenwaju of Friesland in the 11th minute. FrieslandCampina wouldn’t give up easily as Samuel Azeez continued to lay up passes for the strikers to get an equalizer who failed to convert them. Folorunsho of Leadway became a thorn in the flesh of the Friesland defense as he scored two more goals in the second half to get his hat trick and down the Friesland team.

Quarter Final Two

The second match of the day saw Defending Champions of The Remita Corporate Champions Cup Nestle take on two time winners of the Nigeria Telecoms games 9mobile (formerly Etisalat). The match started in a frantic pace as Nestle pushed early on for an opener but the 9mobile defense marshalled by keeper Okotie Nelson stood firm and held on. The second half took a different twist as the Nestle team piled-on the pressure on the 9mobile defense and finally got their opener through Ogunyade in the 34th min. Nestle ran away winners defeating 9mobile by four goals to one with Babalola Olasunanmi getting a brace and David Ore of 9mobile getting a consolation goal in the closing stage of the game.

Match day two of the RC3 tournament saw IHS Towers play UBA and First Bank take on VConnect.

Quarter Final Three

The third match of the tournament involved IHS and UBA. Both teams created clear cut chances in the first half but failed to convert. In the second half, IHS took the lead when Alex Chinedu the captain was fouled in the penalty box. Both teams missed a couple of chances but IHS eventually increased their tally in the 57th minute through Arabanbi Oriyomi who scored from a half volley.

 

Quarter Final Four

The last match of the round saw First Bank take on Vconnect.

Vconnect came into the competition as the wild card and were relatively unknown. First Bank was considered favorites heading into the match.

The game came alive when First Bank was awarded a penalty in the 26th minute of the match. But Kabiru Yakasai failed to convert the opportunity to a goal. In the second half, VConnect having grown in the game got a penalty of their own. They also failed to convert the opportunity into a goal.

First Bank were stunned when substitute Sunday Nanayo repaid the VConnect coach with a wonderful strike to beat Baron Ikpeogu in goal for First Bank. There was still more drama left in the game as First Bank got a second penalty after the ball was handled in the penalty box. They left the crowd stunned when they failed to convert once again with what was the last kick of the game. The match ending a goal to nil in favour of VConnect.

Spectators Engagement

The fans were not left out as they won prizes and other freebies while competing in various challenges like the Take –A- Shot, Free-Kick as well as Fastest Fingers. 5 fans also went home with various gift items during the Raffle Draws. The DJ also played lovely tunes to excite and thrill the crowd.

The children’s corner was in place for the kids and filled with activities like the bouncing castle, face painting. So also the children enjoyed  ice-cream, popcorn and other freebies.

Massage Parlor

The event also featured a massage parlor with experienced physiotherapists and masseurs. The parlor was open to all participants, invited guests and spectators alike. It was an opportunity to enjoy professional full body massage free of charge.

Action continues on Sunday 20th August, 2017 at the Yaba Tech Sports Complex. Leadway Assurance will take on IHS Towers and Nestle will play VConnect.
